Maybe you've heard someone say they were "born again" and quietly thought, What does that even mean? Maybe church feels like a club you were never invited to. Or maybe you've made some choices you're not proud of, and you figure God is the last person who'd want to hear from you.
If that's you, take a breath. You're in the right place.
Here's the first thing we want you to know: you are not broken beyond repair. Over and over in the Bible, God picks the people everyone else gave up on. The liars, the runaways, the ones with messy pasts. You don't have to clean yourself up before you come to him. He's not waiting for the polished version of you. He wants the real one.
Jesus once told a story about a son who took his inheritance, left home and wasted every penny. When he finally came crawling back, ashamed and rehearsing his apology, his father didn't stand at the door with folded arms. The Bible says, "while he was still far off, his father saw him, and was moved with compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him" (Luke 15:20). That father is a picture of God. He runs toward you.
So let's walk through this together, one plain step at a time.
What does "born again" actually mean?
The phrase comes from a late-night conversation in the Bible, in John chapter 3. A respected religious teacher named Nicodemus came to Jesus with questions. Jesus told him, "Most certainly, I tell you, unless one is born anew, he can't see God's Kingdom" (John 3:3).
Nicodemus was confused, just like most of us would be. He asked, "How can a man be born when he is old?" (John 3:4). Jesus explained he wasn't talking about a second physical birth. He said, "That which is born of the flesh is flesh. That which is born of the Spirit is spirit" (John 3:6).

Here's what that means in everyday words. You were born once into a body. That's how you got here. Being born again is a second birth, but on the inside. It's when God makes the deepest part of you, your spirit, brand new and brings you into his family. It's not about turning over a new leaf or trying harder. It's something God does in you.
Andrew Wommack, a Bible teacher we love and learn from, explains it this way: you are a spirit, you have a soul (your mind, will and emotions), and you live in a body. When you're born again, it's your spirit that is made completely new. Your thoughts and habits catch up over time. (You can dig into his Spirit, Soul and Body teaching if you want to go deeper.)
Jesus compared it to the wind: "The wind blows where it wants to, and you hear its sound, but don't know where it comes from and where it is going. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit" (John 3:8). You can't see it happen, but you can see what it does.
Why would anyone need to be born again?
Before we talk about what went wrong, let's start with what's always been true: God loves you. Not the cleaned-up you. You, right now. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life" (John 3:16). The world in that verse includes you.
Now, the Bible uses a word that makes a lot of people flinch: sin. It isn't a word meant to shame you. The original idea behind it is "missing the mark," like an arrow that falls short of the target. Every selfish choice, every hurtful word, every time we go our own way instead of God's way, we miss the mark.
And here's the honest part: all of us do it. "For all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). Not some people. All. That levels the playing field. Nobody is better than you, and you're not worse than anybody else.
The problem is that missing the mark separates us from God, who is perfectly good. And there's nothing we can do to close that gap by trying harder. Which is exactly why God closed it for us.
Why Jesus?
This is the heart of it. "But God commends his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). Read that slowly. While we were yet sinners. God didn't wait for us to get it together. He moved first.

Jesus, God's Son, lived a perfect life, then died on a cross, taking the penalty for every wrong thing we've ever done. Three days later he rose from the dead, proving he had beaten death itself. Because of that, forgiveness is now a gift waiting for you.
The Bible puts it plainly: "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 6:23, KJV). A wage is something you earn. A gift is something you simply receive.
And you really can't earn this one: "for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast" (Ephesians 2:8-9). Grace just means kindness you didn't earn and can't pay back. Faith means trusting God enough to take him at his word.
Why saying it out loud matters
You might wonder why so many people talk about "praying a prayer." It comes from this promise: "if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart, one believes unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation" (Romans 10:9-10).
To confess simply means to say out loud what you believe. There's nothing magic about the words. But speaking them is like signing your name to what your heart already believes. It turns a private thought into a real decision. And saved means rescued: brought out of that separation from God and into his family, for good.
How to be born again, step by step

There's no special place you need to be and no outfit you need to wear. You can do this right where you're sitting. Here's what it looks like:
- Admit you've missed the mark and that you can't fix it on your own (Romans 3:23). That's not defeat. That's honesty, and it's where every one of us starts.
- Believe that Jesus died for you and that God raised him from the dead (Romans 10:9).
- Ask for forgiveness. God promises, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9).
- Confess Jesus as Lord out loud. "Lord" means the one in charge. You're telling him, I'm handing you the steering wheel of my life (Romans 10:9-10).
- Receive. Thank him for the gift. You don't have to feel anything special. You just accept what he's offering, the way you'd take a present from someone who loves you.
If you're ready, read this prayer out loud. Say it in your own voice, and mean it.
A simple prayer to say out loud
Jesus, I need you.
I know I've missed the mark, and I can't fix it on my own. Please forgive me.
I believe you died for me, and I believe God raised you from the dead.
Right now I confess with my mouth: Jesus, you are my Lord. I give you my life.
I receive your forgiveness and your new life now.
Thank you for loving me first. Thank you for making me new. Amen.
What just happened?
If you prayed that and meant it, something real just happened, whether you felt fireworks or nothing at all. The Bible says, "Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new" (2 Corinthians 5:17).
Being born again isn't based on your feelings. Feelings come and go like weather. It's based on God's promise, and God keeps his word. Some people cry, some laugh, some just feel quietly calm. All of that is okay. If doubts come tomorrow, go back to Romans 10:9-10 and remind yourself what he promised.

Remember the son in Jesus' story? When he came home, his father said, "this, my son, was dead, and is alive again. He was lost, and is found" (Luke 15:24). Then they threw a party. That's how heaven feels about you today.
Your first steps
Think of this like the first days of a new friendship. You don't need to know everything. You just need to keep showing up.
Talk to God (that's all prayer is)
Prayer is simply talking with God, like you'd talk to someone who loves you. No fancy words. You can pray in the car, in the shower, or lying awake at night. Here's a simple example:
"Good morning, God. Thank you for today. I'm a little nervous about work, so please help me. Show me how to love the people around me. Thanks for being with me. Amen."
That's it. Talk, and then take a moment to listen.
Read the Bible, starting with John
The Bible is a collection of books, and you don't have to start on page one. Begin with the Gospel of John, which tells the story of Jesus' life. ("Gospel" just means "good news.") Try reading one chapter a day. A modern, easy-to-read version can help, and there are Bible apps you can download at no cost.
Worship
Worship is any way you tell God he matters to you. Often it looks like singing, but it can also be saying thank you, sitting quietly in awe, or living in a way that honors him. Put on some worship music while you drive and sing along, even badly. God loves it.
Find a church or community
You weren't meant to do this alone. A church isn't a building; it's a group of people following Jesus together. Look for a place that teaches from the Bible, talks about Jesus a lot, and makes you feel welcome. It's okay to visit a few before one feels like home.
Get baptized
Baptism is when you're dipped in (or sprinkled with) water as a public way of saying, "I belong to Jesus now." It's like a wedding ring: the ring doesn't create the marriage, but it shows everyone it's real. After the first big group of people believed in Jesus, the apostle Peter told them, "Repent, and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2:38). Repent means to turn around and head God's direction. Ask a local church about getting baptized.

That verse also mentions the Holy Spirit, which is God himself living with you, helping, guiding and strengthening you. Andrew Wommack Ministries has a simple page on receiving the Holy Spirit when you're ready to learn more.
Tell someone
Good news is meant to be shared. Tell a friend, a family member, or someone you trust. You don't need a speech. Just say, "I gave my life to Jesus today." Saying it out loud again helps it sink in.
Hear from people who've been there
On Learn True Self: That Come To Jesus Moment!, Ashley James sits down with real people to hear the moment everything changed for them. Some were running from God for years. Some thought they were too far gone. Their stories might sound a lot like yours. Watch the testimonies on the show.
If you prayed that prayer, we'd love to hear
Seriously. If you just gave your life to Jesus, or you're still thinking it over and have questions, we'd be honored to hear from you. Send us a message, and we'll be cheering for you.

Frequently asked questions
What does it mean to be born again?
It means God makes your spirit, the deepest part of you, brand new when you put your trust in Jesus. Jesus described it in John 3 as a second birth that happens on the inside, by God's Spirit, rather than a physical birth.
Do I have to clean up my life before I can be born again?
No. Romans 5:8 says Christ died for us while we were still sinners. You come to God as you are, and he does the changing from the inside out.
How do I know I'm really born again if I don't feel different?
It's based on God's promise, not your feelings. Romans 10:9-10 says that if you believe in your heart God raised Jesus from the dead and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, you will be saved. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says you are a new creation.
What prayer do I say to be born again?
There are no magic words. Admit you've missed the mark, believe Jesus died and rose again, ask for forgiveness, say out loud that Jesus is your Lord, and thank him for receiving you. The short prayer in this article is a simple way to say that.
What should I do after I'm born again?
Talk to God in prayer, start reading the Gospel of John, try worship, find a Bible-teaching church, get baptized, and tell someone about your decision.
